Niels Donckers' artistic work seems to limit itself to striking environmental conditions in crowdedly built Flanders: a region that illustrates a consciousness of identity, without self-hate or complaint. His photographs of faded glory, prefab apartments and nondescript little houses alongside endless road networks do not desire to act as protest against the ugliness that exudes from these subjects, but rather testify to a manner of acceptance. In the desolation of these photographs there lurks a humor that introduces a note of empathy into the emotionless, technically accomplished images.
